Hurricane Preparation

What is a hurricane?

Understanding hurricanes is the first step in hurricane preparation. A hurricane is a severe, rotating oceanic weather system that has maximum winds in excess of 119 km per hour or 74 mph. It is created and strengthens over tropical oceanic regions. Hurricanes are generally smaller around 500 km in diameter as compared to mid latitude storms and occur near the ocean surface, air spirals in counterclockwise direction. Due to its height, the cyclonic circulation weakens and eventually at the top of the storm it turns clockwise.

Things to do during a hurricane warning:

If a hurricane warning is issued, there are a few basic steps you need to follow as part of hurricane preparation:

Get current updates from your local news or radio channels or from weather.com. Ensure you have a battery powered radio. Keep your emergency supplies kit, sleeping bags, and blankets handy with you. Get your pets and children indoors. Inform your family's emergency contact person about your plans. Ensure your car's fuel tank is full and you have extra cash in hand. Bring loose objects near your house inside. Secure all windows with ply or shutters. Place all records and valuables in a waterproof container and place it at the highest point in your house.

How do you get ready for an evacuation?

As part of hurricane preparation, local authorities might ask you to evacuate. In that case you need to follow certain procedures:

Turn off water taps, switch off and unplug all electrical appliances. Switch off the main fuse. Pack your family's emergency supplies kit, sleeping bags, and blankets. Bring photocopies of important documents like insurance policies and photos of your home's contents. Lock doors and windows before leaving. Evacuate as per routes advised to avoid crowded roads or flooded and washed away roads and bridges.

What to do if you aren't told to evacuate?

If you are not advised to evacuate, hopefully you should have had ample time get supplies as part of hurricane preparation.

Here are some tips you also may want to consider: Stay at home. Leave the roads for those who have been advised to evacuate. Clean the bathtub using bleach and fill it with water for cleaning and washing. Set the temperature of the fridge to maximum and close it. If advised by local authorities turn off utilities like water and power.

During a hurricane if you can't get out, stay inside your house, away from doors and windows and take shelter under something sturdy like a staircase or large piece of furniture.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is a great source to keep updated during a hurricane threat. (NOAA)

Protecting Your Business With a Commercial Insurance

While you are working hard towards building sustainable and progressive strategies for your new business, also take into consideration the risks involved in running a fledging business. Investing in commercial insurance for your business is a simple solution to protect your assets from unforeseen events such as natural disasters, theft, and other legal liabilities that are a financial strain on a new business.

1. Understanding what your Coverage Requirements are -

The coverage that you eventually choose and the cost of your premium will depend on the type of business you own.

2. Investing in a Property Cover -

You may have to purchase insurance on your own if you own an office space. If you are renting, then you need to check with your landlord if your rental agreement includes a cover. A property cover typically includes the structure of your building and the contents of your business.

3. Personal versus Commercial Property -

As an owner of a new business, there may be a number of items that may cross over between your personal use and for professional use. For example, it is likely that you bring in your home computer system to use at work, or use your family car to go for business meetings. In such situations, it is important that you ensure your personal coverage suffices your business needs.

4. Always invest in a Liability Insurance -

Whether your business is incorporated, is a partnership or a sole proprietorship, there are a number of situations in which you can be held personally liable for a number of actions on behalf of your business. It is important to cover yourself and your business from the risk of being sued in case a customer or third party injures themselves in your premises, and also protect yourself from clients who allege financial losses due to negligence.

Doctors and lawyers usually protect themselves with the help of a professional liability coverage which is also commonly known as malpractice insurance. If your business involves manufacturing and / or sale of physical products, you can invest in a product liability coverage which protects companies from lawsuits in case a consumer is injured as a result of the product. The extent of your cover must be directly proportional to the potential risk your product poses to its users.

5. Worker's Compensation Coverage -

Any business, new or old is expected to purchase a worker's compensation cover and preferably also a health insurance plan to protect the health and well being of your employees. Laws pertaining to this cover vary in each country.

As a new business owner, it is recommended that you work towards indentifying an insurance agent or service provider and start building a long term relationship with them. With all the various covers that you may be expected to purchase in the due course of your business, and in some unfortunate situations, the requirement to make claims, it is important that you have a singular "go-to" person who would help you through the complexities of getting insured and making claims.

A Piano Thanksgiving - Help Your Child in Piano Lessons Count Their Musical Blessings

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to for families to give thanks for all the blessings they have received over the past year. It's also a great time to teach your children to do the same. Children taking piano lessons, because they are supported by so many people, have a wonderful opportunity to learn this tradition. You can help them realize how many people are in their musical community of support who play an important role in helping them reach their goals. One of the most difficult concepts young adults learn is how much others give to their success, and not to take such efforts on their behalf for granted. For most piano students these efforts would include the work of:

1. Piano Teachers

2. Their Parents and Family

3. Friends who recognize their need to practice

4. Music teachers at school.

5. Choruses they may also be involved in at school or church.

6. Family members who give them music gifts such as CD's or music books.

7. The Piano Technician who tunes your piano and keeps it good playing condition.

8. Other piano students who share their enthusiasm for music with them.

9. The local music store that provides a great selection of music for teachers to choose for their students.

10. The Piano Sales Gallery that also provides a wonderful piano and Recital Hall where students perform for their family and friends and for auditions.

There is a lot for piano students to be thankful for. Helping kids learn to be appreciative early pays off in the long run. So take a few minutes at the dinner table this holiday season to help your piano student give thanks for all their musical blessings.

History of Skateboarding - From Pastime to Passion!

The idea of the skateboard dates back to the time when kids used to build rafts and used logs to float across the streams for fun. Similarly, during the winters they used to slide over the icy slopes using sledges. Those were the times when bi-cycles were greatly popular yet an extremely expensive thing. Not every family could afford one for their kids or even themselves, for that matter. Skates, on the other hand, were the best and most affordable alternative for bi-cycles. But those skates were designed poorly and were easily broken. At the same time they could not serve the same purpose as the bi-cycles as they did not have a carrier attached to it, neither could they run as fast as a bi-cycle.

In order to make the skateboards more useful, kids used to attach a handle to that and make it look like a paddle-less bi-cycle. That would help them hang a bag of goods on the handle and they could use it for different utility purposes like grocery shopping. That was how a skate board was used in its initial stages.

As the time passed and the basic designs began to take more refined shapes, those creative ways of transportation emerged as sports like biking and roller-skates. Adventure skating is one of the ways of transportation that has surfaced over the last few decades as sports. Youngsters have shown great deal of interest in this form of sports.

In the late 1950's skateboarding started getting some reorganization when teenagers used to kill their after-school time on their skateboards roaming around the in the neighborhood, performing cool tricks. As the number of skateboarding enthusiasts grew, so did the competition among the kids. Everyone wants to be the coolest kid on the block, so they started to learn new tricks and built inclined planes and wood structures in the neighborhood where they could practice and display those tricks.

As the initially pastime idea gained popularity, it was adopted as a sports. This gave those kids a platform to showcase their skills and make a living from it. More and more companies started to sponsor events and they were held more frequently. Skateboarders were given the chance to go on tours and showcase their skills to a greater audience.

Some of the skaters out-performed the others and started to perform such dangerous tricks which the sporting events could not allow them to do in front of the audience. This gave rise to extreme sports where all the extra-ordinary bikers and skateboarders could perform dangerous tricks and show off their skills. They had become so passionate about the sports that they are will to take greater risks and perform stunts that would leave each one of us in awe!

Maintenance of Marine Batteries

The strength and capacity of a marine battery is defined by its plate size and amperage output. Marine starting batteries, used on larger vessels that have many "house" electrical systems, have high amperage outputs and more plate surface for bursts of energy lasting for five to 15 seconds. Starting batteries are independent of all the other electrical systems on board a craft, including house batteries.

House batteries have thicker but fewer plates than starting batteries, use (DC), or direct current and are designed to supply electricity to on board components such as the windless, stereo, bilge pump, navigational instruments and lighting. Smaller craft use a single dual-purpose deep cell marine battery, designed to start and run all electrical systems. Picking a starting or house battery requires matching the amperage and type of battery to the engine size and number of electrical components on the craft, which is outlined in the owner's manual.

The charging fluids in marine batteries come in three basic types: wet cell, AGM (absorbed glass mat), and gel. Wet cell batteries are filled with a watery charging fluid, which can be inspected from a removal cell cap. These batteries last long and are cheaper than the other types. They need to be vented to dissipate internal pressure and pose the problem of acid spills and deterioration. AGM batteries are sealed, making them maintenance free. They resist shock and vibration better than the wet type, but cost more. They are also heavier and can suffer damage from overcharging. Gel batteries, also maintenance free and resistant to shock damage, have a very low discharge rate, making them the optimum choice for long-period storage. They cost more than the other types, and are more sensitive to recharging techniques, which requires a special gel-type battery charger.

Maintenance on the AGM and gel batteries requires only a visual inspection, to check for outer case damage and clean-tight cable connections. Since they are sealed, a voltmeter is used to measure the standing volts, or charge capacity. A 100% charge will indicate 12.73 volts; a 60% charge will indicate 12.24 volts and a 20% charge will show a reading of 11.66 volts. Wet cell batteries can be checked with a hydrometer in each of the battery cells, or by a voltmeter. A hydrometer will show the specific gravity of the acid fluid by indicating a reading that is produced by a floating ball inside a tube. The scale on the hydrometer tube will show charge rates beginning with low and ranging to full. Wet cell battery fluid must be checked and maintained at least once a month. Distilled water is added to the cell, to bring the level up to 1/8-inch over the top of the plate.

Quick Mexican Chicken, Tortilla, and Cheesy Broccoli Casserole

After a busy day you want to come home, get a meal on the table quickly, put your feet up and relax. This casserole is made from pantry ingredients. I bought extra tender, skinless, de-boned chicken breasts and sauted them. You may buy a rotisserie chicken and shred the meat, or use grilled chicken breasts, available in the grocery store deli or cheese aisle.

Salsa con queso is a slightly hot cheese sauce with green chiles and it gives the casserole a little "kick." The mild tomato salsa rounds out the flavors and also adds color. Use mild salsa, not medium or hot, if you have young children.

This is a meal -- protein, vegetable, and starch -- in one dish. If the broccoli flowers are large, cut them into smaller pieces. To round out the meal, serve buttered corn and a green salad. Quick Mexican Chicken, Tortilla and Cheesy Broccoli Casserole is a satisfying dinner or lunch. You may wish to make two casseroles, and freeze one for future use.

Ingredients

1 tablespoon extra light olive oil

15 ounces chicken breasts (about two cups, cooked)

5 wheat tortillas, 7 1/2" in size

15-ounce jar salsa con queso

2 cups frozen broccoli flowers, defrosted

8-ounce package reduced fat, shredded Mexican cheese (four cheeses combined)

1 1/2 cups mild chunky salsa

Method

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Pour olive oil into skillet. Cut chicken into bite-sized pieces and saute over medium heat until slightly brown. Coat a two-quart, 8" x 11" baking dish with cooking spray. Cut tortillas in half with kitchen shears. Lay three halves in bottom of baking dish. Layer half of the cooked chicken over the tortillas. Scatter half of the broccoli over the chicken. Sprinkle half of the shredded cheese over broccoli. Repeat layers once, finishing with three tortilla halves. Dot the tortillas with spoonfuls of chunky salsa. Cover casserole with release foil and bake for half an hour. Uncover and bake 15-20 minutes more, until the cheese is bubbly and the tortillas start to brown. Makes 6-8 servings.

How To Increase Traffic To Your Website

Having a website is only the beginning of successfully marketing online. Now you have to get people to visit (i.e. drive traffic) your spankin' new sparkly website. And you want to drive quality traffic - visitors who are actually your target market and are likely to buy from you.

Here are a few tips to increase traffic to your website:

Optimize your content. Identify keywords that are used to search for the type of products and services you offer and work them into the text on your site. This can help your SEO ranking. These keywords should ideally appear a few times in your titles, the first 1 - 2 paragraphs of the page, and sprinkled throughout the article. However, don't overdo it - Google will penalize your for that. If you have a WordPress site, get plugins such as All-In-One SEO or Yoast, which you can add "SEO Title" and "Meta Keyword" to all your posts and pages - this is great if getting the keywords into your title and articles is challenging. To help you find the right keywords, use Google AdWords to get insight into which ones are more competitive and how many searches they get per month. You can try looking up phrases or questions - and use those phrases or questions as your blog title. Use Alt Tags for Images. Search engine can't "see" image, but they can "see" alt tags just like html text. This is just as important as tagging the text if you want search engines to notice you. Submit your website URL to search engine directories. Add sharing buttons to your blog posts to help your fans spread the word for you - word of mouth of powerful.

Driving traffic to your site is only half the story, you also want to make your visitors stick around and return from time to time. Here are a few tips to help you do so:

Be mindful of your website's load time. Although it's not an issue for most, it does get frustrating when you have huge images, and unnecessary bells and whistles that make people wait forever (and that can be a matter of a few seconds in the land of the interwebs). If your visitors have to wait too long for each page to load, they may just run out of patience and leave. If you have codes (e.g. tracking) that can be placed either in the header or the footer area, put them in the footer area so that it won't affect the load time of the top part of your pages. Make sure your website is easy to navigate so that your audience can find the relevant content quickly and easily. If they can't find what they need, they will get frustrated and leave, thinking that you don't have what they are looking for. Write in "simple" and proper English - check your grammar and spelling, but avoid "big words" and jargons as much as you can. You can test your articles' "readability score" here. Ideally, your score for "grade level" should be around 7 - 8 (means a 7 - 8 grader can understand), to make your articles easy to digest and accessible to most.

Effective Parent Advocacy Skills

Possessing effective parent advocacy skills is not something that comes naturally to many parents of children with special needs. However, I believe learning and refining these skills is essential for the long-term success of most children with special needs. Do not be fooled into thinking that just because you live in a "good" school district that your child is getting a quality education. Based on how the current educational system works (or doesn't work) you must be an active participant in your child's education if you want them to possess the necessary skills to function in society after they graduate from high school or age out of special education at 21.

One very important advocacy skill to constantly work on developing is building positive working relationships with your child's teacher(s) and case managers. The best way to do this is to establish regular communication with your child's service providers, to show up to IEP meetings and conferences and to share your successes and failures as home. Children with special needs really need a team that works together to make steady progress.

Another very important advocacy skill is to know and understand your parental rights, also called procedural safeguards. These rights are spelled out in The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and each state has them listed on their department of education website. The difficulty with these rights is that they are written in legal language, which is often hard to understand and interpret. I urge you to take the time to read the packet that should be given to you when you sign consent for your child to be evaluated for special education and every year, thereafter. If you do not understand any of your rights, either ask the case manager to explain it to you or go on-line to learn what it means.

Another very important advocacy skill to possess is the ability to stay calm and cool at meetings, over the phone and through e-mail communication even when you are angry or upset. Many people do not respond well to angry people, especially when it is directed at them. Take your time to gather your thoughts and get your emotions under control before addressing issues with your child's education, IEP or the IEP process. You are much more likely to get to a resolution that will benefit your child if you keep yourself rationale and calm than if you are explosive, accusing and/or disrespectful.

The Importance of Using an Accurate eBay Item Description

Hi Folks,

Gorgeous day up here in the North East of England. Been for a long walk this morning with my canine friend. Thoroughly enjoyed it and I know she did too because she's snoring now contentedly, as dogs do!

Rather than snoring myself (that'll come later). I want to talk about the importance of using an accurate, precise and clear eBay item description.

What you MUST do is describe your eBay item accurately and honestly. Well that's obvious I hear you say. It might be obvious to me and you but have a look at some eBay item descriptions and see what you think. Sometimes it is clear that what sellers are describing is wide of the mark. An example - 'item is in mint and good as new condition', but there may be a photo of the product which suggests it clearly is not.

If there are defects or faults you need to tell the buyer about, make sure you tell them. And tell them EXACTLY what they are. Don't skim or gloss and try to make out the item is in better condition than it is. Otherwise if you sell this on eBay and you have not described the item properly you will only get a dissatisfied buyer. They will then leave you bad feedback OR you will get the 'item is not as described' message from eBay. This will mean you will have to refund the item (once they've returned it, although some will try for a refund before they return it, but that's another story). Either bad feedback or making a refund and having to resell the product will cost you TIME and MONEY. Bad for your business. Don't get into this situation.

Another sign that your eBay item description is no good or not sufficient, is if you receive a lot of questions about the product. Again time consuming and avoidable. Questions are a sure sign that you have not described your eBay item properly. Give the prospective buyer as much information as you possibly can. Even more than you think is necessary. eBay buyers love to information, the more the better, you can never have too much detail for them.

I'll tell you how I do my eBay item descriptions in my eBay Shop.

What I have is to the top left a photo of what the item is. This works well because it looks better than a load of words and I think, well I know buyers love to see pictures of what is being sold. More the better. However I only use one photo in the actual eBay item description and further pictures in the photo section.

Then, still at the top of the page and to the right of the photo. I have a simple five or six point bulleted list (or as many as you might need). It describes everything I think an eBay buyer would want to know and it does this in a simple, easy to view way. I'm generally not a fan of eBay templates carrying all the bells and whistles. You know the ones you see with twenty three different colour schemes (I use three), flash graphics and moving banners etc etc. I find these off putting and would consider them a distraction from my product. Simple and clear works for me every time.

It is very very rare that I get a question about a product I am selling so this is proof that my simple system works, and I see no reason why I need to change it. If I do receive a question from a prospective eBay buyer, of course I answer it but then I go back to my description and add the information as required.

I hope you have found this information useful and it helps you with your eBay item descriptions. They really are so important.

Any questions please ask and feel free to leave a comment too.

Brain Cancer

We all know the function of brain. It is the main control center of our body that monitors/instructs everything thing in our body. Any disease that affects this central control system is really a big problem. And the worst thing to happen is brain cancer. Brain cancer is the development of brain tumors i.e. tumors in the brain. These could either be benign or malignant; the latter being the really harmful one.

Types of brain cancer

As most other types of cancer, brain cancer is also classified as primary brain cancer and secondary brain cancer. Primary brain cancer is the one that originates from the brain itself i.e. that originates in the brain cells. Secondary brain cancers is the one that doesn't originate from the brain cells but is instead passed on from another organ/ part of the body

Causes of brain cancer

As is the case with many other types of cancer, the causes of brain cancer is a big topic for researchers. However, certain genetic conditions and exposure of head to radiation (as received during radiotherapy as part of treatment of other conditions) are known to be causes of cancer. There are a number of other theories that keep coming up time and again, each suggesting different possible causes of brain tumor (one famous one is about mobile phones causing brain cancer). However, there really isn't a very convincing theory about what causes brain cancer.

Symptoms of brain cancer

Some very common symptoms of brain cancer are headaches and nausea; but these can really be caused by something else. So, headache and nausea shouldn't really be taken as brain cancer. Some other symptoms of brain cancer are related to incorrect working of some of the basic senses (that are mainly governed by brain) e.g. speech, vision and smell etc. Again, there is no point in getting worried all by yourself; you should, in any case, consult a qualified doctor and let them know clearly about the various symptoms that you have observed. The doctor can then diagnose whether it is brain cancer. You might be referred to a neurologist for further examination (if brain cancer is suspected).

Diagnosis and treatment of brain cancer

The diagnosis of brain cancer will include tests that are based on the working of the nervous system. So, testing of basic human senses like vision, speech, hearing, mental capability, reflexes is taken up for diagnosis of brain cancer. The treatment of brain cancer is done through surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy (and the combination of these).

Work Related Injuries in the Workplace Today

Every day in America, someone, somewhere, will become the victim of work related injuries. There are many different types of injuries reported and hundreds of thousands of dollars paid out every year to injured workers by Workers Compensation to cover time lost from the workplace. There are many simple steps to take to correct and prevent these injuries from happening, although many of them will go unheeded, until the next injury occurs.

Causes of Injuries

Work related injuries occur for a variety of reasons in the workplace today. Some of them are simply random accidents, whereas others are the result of basic safety rules not being followed, or enforced. People who work with tools regularly or operate large machinery with cutting or crimping edges make up a large number of these injuries.

Another type of injury that emergency rooms everywhere will see a great number of are muscle injuries related to improper lifting in the workplace and repetitive motion injuries. The two most common of this type are carpal tunnel injuries and back injury.

Compensation Law

Under the federal Workmen's Compensation law, any employee that has an injury at work must be given medical attention at a local emergency room or urgent care facility soon after the incident happens. In order to file for workmen's compensation, the injuries must be fully documented and a doctor's orders for treatment will need to be filed with the workplace human resources department, their insurance agency, and the government in order for the injured employee to be given a decision as to whether or not they are entitled to compensation.

As part of the medical attention and examination immediately following any workplace injury, a drug test will need to be administered as well, to ensure that the employee was in full control of their faculties at the time of the accident. Other documents that will need to be filed will include the doctor's treatment notes, employee's testimony of events leading up to the injury, whether any safety rules were violated and the employer's testimony as to the soundness of any safety procedures currently being used.

After the Injury

Once the patient has been treated and the severity of the injury has been determined, they will either be released back to work or put on restricted work orders. A set of restricted work orders will include a time-period for which the employee cannot work as normal or a temporary release to be given light duty assignments that will not cause their injury to become worse. Muscle strains, cuts, wounds and other injuries that require time for the body to heal will garner this type of medical restriction.

Another part of being able to heal and return to work at a future date will often include some form of occupational therapy be done by the injured worker. This can be in one of two forms:

1. Physical occupational therapy that centers around getting the worker back to full health and able to return to the workforce

2. Educational occupational therapy where the employee must prove that they have been taught the proper procedures involving safety and the operation of their normal job and can be expected to maintain the highest standards of safety from this point on.

Not every company requires the second form of occupational therapy, but perhaps if they did there would be fewer work related injuries in the future.

PPC and SEO: How to Choose Just One

SEO, Search Engine Optimization, advertising or marketing is an extremely reliable source of online marketing. It is when your site is setup to ensure that the when a keyword is entered into a search engine your site will be one of the top results in that category.

PPC Benefits:

1. Results Instantly- One of the most beneficial parts of PPC is that you can achieve results almost immediately. Your site will instantly be placed at the top of the search results lists, and this will lead a larger amount of traffic to your site.

2. Limited Cost- You can limit the amount of money that you spend on your PPC marketing program. You can adjust accordingly or simply cap the amount of money that you would like to spend on the program.

3. Track Results- You can easily check your status and know exactly how often someone is using the PPC link to gain access to your website. You will be able to discover the amount of times that someone accesses your site and compare it to the amount of times you are paying for PPC link.

PPC Negatives:

1. Uncertain Space- PPC spots are not earned in a search engine result list. They are setup under featured sites, and this generally means that they are flagged separately. Most people that use a search engine regularly know that these featured sites are paid for advertising sites and may not necessarily match exactly what they are looking for, and this means that they may choose to skip these sites and go straight to the natural results.

2. Long Term Expense- The major downside to the PPC marketing is that you are not earning your spot on the search engine search results, so you will need to continue to pay in order to keep receiving results. The expense will add up over time, and it will become rather expensive in the long run.

SEO Benefits:

1. Earned Placement- The placement that is earned is much longer lasting than one that is purchased. SEO helps to market your page so that it earns a place as top results in all of the top search engines.

2. Low Cost- SEO will take some time to integrate into your site, but it can come at an extremely affordable price. SEO may take a little more time in order to see results, but it should work effectively and guide more concentrated traffic to your site.

SEO Negatives:

1. Dedication- SEO does take a specific amount of time in order to establish on your site. It is extremely important to dedicate a specific amount of time to your SEO marketing program. It takes time to keep your site up to date and current, and it is important to place time aside in order to keep it.
